DEPARTMENT OF UROLOGY Resident Interview Day December 5, 2014 Overview The Department of Urology offers a fully accredited, training program in Urology. One year of training in general surgery is required for admission to the program.

The staff of the department includes a full-time chairman assisted by two full-time and 6 voluntary urologic surgeons who devote a large portion of their time to Resident teaching. All members of the staff participate in weekly conferences. We are proud to state that our department has a 100% pass rate on both the oral and written boards for the past 10 years. The Department of Urology is responsible for a large clinical service that includes both inpatient and outpatient units, and an active clinical and basic science research program. A full complement of urology is covered throughout the five years including urologic oncology, urologic trauma, endocrinology, infertility, sexual dysfunction, neurourology and urodynamics, female urology, and pediatric urology.

As a teaching hospital, Brookdale is dedicated to training new physicians. Brookdale's House Staff is comprised of graduate doctors, physicians who already have their medical degrees and are receiving further training in a specialty. Residents are in the initial phase of postgraduate training, and fellows in the process of obtaining more advanced specialty training.
Patients who live in the Brookdale community gain yet another advantage by living near a teaching hospital. Most of Brookdale's graduating residents and fellows go into practice in our area, adding to the medical resources the community can draw on. And much of Brookdale's research focuses on the serious medical issues the community faces, such as heart disease, hypertension or breast cancer. The Marie Smith Schwartz Medical Library contains an extensive collection of books and journals. The professionally staffed library also offers audiovisual materials, computer-aided instruction on a variety of clinical disorders, reference and bibliographic searches, both mediated and end-user on-line access to National Library of Medicine-MEDLAR databases, interlibrary loans, and photocopy services. Located on the main floor of the Samuel and Bertha Schulman Institute for Nursing and Rehabilitation, the library is open from 9AM - 7PM, Monday to Friday with 24 hour access for residents with photo ID. House Staff should be aware that Medical Education is responsible for the following Functions:.
Prepares house staff contracts. Assists in obtaining visas and immigration paperwork. Coordinates payroll and other benefits including malpractice coverage. Coordinates issuing of pagers, uniforms, parking and housing. Conducts house staff orientation.
Maintains credential files, including1-9 forms, verifies residencies and employment, and completes licensure and other forms. Coordinates mandatory certification courses. Issues diplomas and conducts graduation ceremony. Coordinates access to Hospital Information Systems. Coordinates and tracks annual house staff evaluations. Schedules conference rooms and classrooms. Acts as house staff advocate, in conjunction with CIR.
Tracks compliance with Employee Health requirements. Develops and maintains House Staff Manual.
For Your Convenience Brookdale provides night on-call rooms for house officers. The coffee shop in the main lobby is open 24 hours a day, and a five-story garage is physically linked to the hospital. Research and Conferences House officers are encouraged to participate in research and to attend meetings, conferences and board review courses with all expenses paid by the hospital. Individuals who attend these meetings report on them at staff conferences. Vacations House officers receive four weeks vacation during each year of service to the hospital. Selection of Residents and Visiting Staff Candidates for residencies and fellowships are selected on a competitive basis. Special preference in appointments to Attending staff is given to physicians who receive their house staff training at Brookdale. Clinical Laboratories The Clinical Laboratories recently moved into a completely updated facility, one that is designed to accelerate test processing and expand the laboratories' capabilities to treat the growing population of both primary care patients and patients with chronic conditions. Community Health Services The Department of Community Health Services and Ambulatory Care is responsible for the Ambulatory Care Center and six Brookdale Family Care Centers. Dermatology The Department of Dermatology is an integrated part of the residency training program with SUNY-HSCB.
Emergency Medicine The Department of Emergency Medicine provides Attending and Resident staffs with some of the most complex and stimulating experiences in medicine and surgery. There is an integrated residency training program with SUNY-HSCB. Family Medicine The Department of Family Medicine grants privileges to board-certified or board-eligible family physicians who interact with house staff as preceptors. Neurology The Department of Neurology utilizes an 18-bed neurology inpatient service, electroencephalography, electromyography, computerized tomographic head and spine scanning, cerebral angiography, and myelography. Orthopedic Surgery The Department of Orthopedic Surgery is responsible for the treatment of injuries and illnesses of the musculoskeletal system in all ages, and includes a division for sports medicine.
There is an integrated residency training program with SUNY-HSCB. Pathology The Department of Pathology is staffed by six full-time, board-certified pathologists and is accredited by the College of American Pathologists.

Pharmacy The Department of Pharmacy is an ACPE-accredited continuing pharmacy education provider. Two American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited pharmacy residency programs provide post-graduate pharmacy Education. The PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice and the PGY-2 Ambulatory Care residency programs each enroll 2 residents per year. Radiation Oncology The Department of Radiation Oncology provides optimal clinical care for oncology patients requiring radiation therapy.
Radiology The Department of Radiology offers the complete range of diagnostic services and interventional radiographic procedures. Rehabilitation Medicine The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine provides consultative, therapeutic and specialized diagnostic services to patients throughout the medical center.
